From out importing partner Impexcor:

Busanze coffee washing station is a new coffee washing station started operation in 2016 by IMPEXCOR coffee company and local farmers of Nyaruguru district. The washing station is located at the edges of Nyungwe forest. This allows most coffee trees around the area to grow in shades under trees. This allows beans to be rich in density and aroma.  Busanze coffee story is not only about the quality and is also about the history and patriotism of Nyaruguru people. Usually, Nyaruguru district is known as the home of the most resilient people in the nation. After the genocide against the Tutsi, Nyaruguru is now a beacon of unity and reconciliation. It is in that context Busanze coffee washing station is playing its role by grouping farmers in cooperatives based on the context of each village. A good example is a successful story of Cooperative Umurego Nteko (KUN) that composed of 82 farmers mainly young men and women mostly from families of both genocide survivors and perpetrators.

The Busanze region is known as the home of wonderful coffee in recent days. In 2014, our partner company (IMPEXCOR Coffee) initiated a wave of planting new trees in the area where they distributed thousands of trees to local farmers who were planting other crops such as bananas and beans. After the successful first harvest, hundreds of other farmers joined the journey and now coffee has become the main income generation to so many farmers around Busanze and surrounding villages. Not only business relationships but this practice also created the sense of ownership and the trust that motivates farmers to improve the quality of the coffee. It is for that reason Busanze coffee has won awards in the last couple of years including Alliance cup of excellence in 2018.

From our importing partner JNP Coffee:

It takes courage to enter the coffee business as a widow. This coffee honors one woman’s courage and leadership. The Kirundi word “ntwari” encompasses both of these qualities.

Several years after her husband passed, she has found her voice in this male-dominated industry. She first met Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian as she learned with other women farmers how to cultivate specialty coffee the JNP Coffee way. Now she’s ready to lead young women as she brings them along in her growing coffee business.

Ntwari coffee is grown in Muyinga (now part of Buhumuza Province) and is processed by a women-owned wet mill.

Elevation: 1960 MASL

Variety: 74110, 74112

Processing Method: Dried-In-Fruit Natural

From our importing partner Swift Coffee Sourcing:

“When I sourced my first container of Ethiopian coffee, I was proud to turn to Betty and Mahder, with whom I’ve worked since 2019 or so. This washed-processed Yirgacheffe has that stunning lemon verbena, white florals, and dark honey quality that has defined coffees from this region for decades.

Cherries are aggregated from small plots in Dumerso and nearby Chito, coordinated by Hirut Birhanu and local suppliers—including pickers from the St George’s church community. Hand-selection and transparent trade underpin every step. Hirut (Betty) and Mahder are pillars of the Dumerso community and recently completed construction on a health clinic and a day care, handing the keys to community leaders in a ceremony crowned with dancing and widespread delight.

Swift Coffee Sourcing is proud to lean into CEO Emily McIntyre’s six-year relationship with Hirut Berhanu and her partner and sister Mahder to celebrate their hard work and resilience in the face of constant challenges to produce beautiful coffees.”

Liner Notes

Hi! I’m J DeFuria, founder, green buyer, roaster, packing assistant, junior brand representative, interning wholesale manager, and exhausted dad, of MRCR. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to take part in the chain of coffee and I remind myself of that everyday.

Making coffee accessible (philosophically and financially) has been the primary goal here. With ever changing social and economic paradigms, the challenge to make this offer a reality is ever increasing. The energy and focus is to follow through with this goal.
